Description

William Leiper, 1880. 2-storey, gabled, asymmetrical, rectangular-plan house. Whinstone rubble with polished red sandstone ashlar dressings; mock, half-timbered deatils. Base course; 1st floor jettied on corbel; quoins.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3 asymmetrical bays. Bargeboarded porch advanced to outer right; masonry base, 2-leaf, half-glazed door at centre, flanking windows with pierced quatrefoils above, half-timbering in gablehead. Full-height, canted bay to left with half- timbered gable, bargeboard; compartmentalised leaded window at ground; tile-hung apron between ground and upper window. Full-height, advanced stack

immediately to left; blank bay to outer left. Recessed to outer left

is service entrance; large, bipartite, square dormer (2, 12-pane

sash and caswe windows). Lean-to porch at ground; exposed rafters; pointed arch doorway to left, blank to right. Transomed and mullioned leaded, stair window above porch on right return of house; shouldered stack immediately to left of window.

SW ELEVATION: broad, bargeboarded, gabled bay to outer right, full-height canted window, tiled panel between ground and upper window; half-timbering jettied out on either side of 1st floor window on decorative wooden consoles. Window off-centre to left at ground, upper pane round-headed ashlar divisions, plate glass lower pane; blank at ground outer left. Helm-roofed dormerhead to left abutted by tall, shouldered stack with moulded arrises.

NW ELEVATION: 3-bay with single storey block to outer left.

Full-height canted bay with bargeboarded gable to outer right;

middle bay off-centre to left, window at ground with leaded, bipartite directly under eaves. Gabled, half-timbered bay to right, cat-slide to left; biparite casement window; single window at ground. Window in single storey block to outer left.

NE ELEVATION: broad gabled bay; bipartite window at centre, window to left; window at gablehead. Narrow window on right return of porch. Right return of main house recessed to outer left.

Plate glass and leaded casement windows; 12-pane sash and case dormer; stair window with coloured border- glazing. Grey slate roof with red tile ridge. Tall, full-height, wallhead stacks; paired wallhead stacks on right return.

INTERIOR: plain pine enclosed stair; timber picture rail; timber fireplaces.
