Description

Mid 19th century. Tall U-plan wall; sandstone rubble walls to front and right; brick wall to left. Ashlar coping to front; 3 curvilinear gableheads (truncated to far right and left) and intermittent doorways. Inner brick lining and modern steel beams to rear of gableheads. Large circular and rectangular ashlar planters inside walls.

A-Group with Newbattle Abbey, Newbattle Abbey Policies Fernery, Grotto and Ice House, Lothian Burial Ground, Maiden Bridge, Monkland Wall, North and South Sundials, Port Lodge, Newbattle Road and Abbey Road Wall and Gatepiers, Archbishop Leighton's House, 1-5 Riverside Cottages, Old Bridge, Newmills Road, Dalkeith Lodge in Dalkeith Burgh and The King's Gate in Cockpen Parish. This was once the walled garden of Newbattle Abbey, the gableheads emulate the curvilinear gables on the house. The glasshouses, potting sheds and pavilions no longer remain and the walls now enclose a modern (1990's) housing estate. The walls do not appear on 1st Edition OS Map, 1854.
