Later 19th century. 2-storey gardener's house and walled garden.
BELSIS COTTAGE: coursed cream sandstone with regrettable modern raised pointing and concrete repairs to ashlar margins; cavetto cornice. 3 bays of main elevation grouped towards centre; wide doorway with 2-leaf doors; windows in flanking bays and to each floor above. Rear elevation incorporated in garden wall. Single storey piend roofed addition at ground to outer side with 1st floor window above.
12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows; grey slates to piend roof; centre stack, renderd and lined.
WALLED GARDEN: high rubble cream sandstone walls with ashlar coping, surrounding large garden on ground falling to S, and adjoined to gardener's cottage at SE corner; further garden formed by inner walls at SE corner, incorporating side elevation of gardener's cottage. Coped, sett-off buttresses evenly spaced along N wall. Segmentally arched wide entrances with ashlar surrounds and corniced pilasters. Pointed arch pedestrian entrance (currently blocked), with rubble surround and depressed arch niche above, containing carved thistle.
Modern house now sited within walled garden. Allegedly the mother of the great missionary, Robert Moffat, was born in Belsis Cottage, which is so named because of the Belsis Burn, flowing nearby.
