Description

Late 18th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan farmhouse made L-plan by slightly later, lower 2-storey service wing at rear. Rubble whinstone masonry with eroded thin harling, sandstone dressings, slate roof, corrugated asbestos at rear. Droved margins at doors and windows, plate glass glazing pattern; coped skews with moulded skew ends; ashlar and brick shouldered end stacks with thackstanes.

S ELEVATION: door with narrow fanlight at centre, window at left and right bays, 3 windows at 1st floor; blank right return gable.

W ELEVATION: gable at right with window at ground and 1st floor right; service wing at left with door at right, partially blocked window at left, 2 windows at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: ruinous doorways at centre of ground and 1st floor, (forestair removed); blank gable advanced at right with door at re-entrant.

INTERIOR: fielded panelled doors; some rooms have simply moulded cornices; 19th century range.

STEADING: rectangular-plan, rubble building with eroded thin harling, corrugated sheet metal mono-pitch roof; 4 segmental arches on S elevation, all but 2nd from right built up. Shanty additions at rear.

Statement of Interest

The 1860 OS map shows an extensive quadrangular-plan steading, most of which had been removed by 1900. Old Baldragon farmhouse and the remains of the steading is in a deteriorating condition, but remains a largely unscathed example of a traditional type.
