Description

James Ross of Inverness, architect, 1845; extended circa

1856, William Lawrie of Inverness. Former courthouse and jail

with walled exercise yard to 3 sides. Main building now 2

storeys, T-plan, gabled low porch fills either re-entrant

angle (original block rectangular-plan; rear wing and porches additions). North east elevation: wing and low porches all

gabled; cherry-caulked coursed and squared rubble with

contrasting ashlar dressings (remainder whitewashed harl);

finialed 3-bay main gable with slits flanking ground floor

window, narrow lights above; round-headed door with fanlight

to either porch. Asymmetrical south west elevation, original

door now a window; round-headed doorway to north west gable,

lean-to adjoins at south east. Small-paned sash windows; end

and axial stacks; slate roofs.

Interior: vaulted cells at ground level; observation slits;

key safe.

Exercise yard 8-sided on plan; walls rubble-built with ashlar

coping.
