17th century. Sandstone rubble, 3-stage beehive dovecot. Pair of string courses dividing stages; pair of rat courses. Barred doorway to N, with tooled ashlar dressings. 600 stone nesting boxes.
A Group with Northfield House (see separate listing). The first built dovecots in Scotland were the beehive dovecots that appeared in the 16th century, typically circular-plan conical structures with access to the central chamber by means of an occulus opening at the building's apex. The Northfield House Dovecot has some diagonally-inset slates remaining in the higher of the two string courses, evidence that the feature was manipulated for use as a rat course. The dovecot was originally in the policies of Northfield House.
