Building begun circa 1774; collapsed 1776 and rebuilt - 1778; strengthened 1930-31. Roadbridge, 2 large segmental arches
over River Nith. All built of red ashlar; recessed arch
rings, pointed central cutwaters carried upwards as
pedestrian refuges: parapets widened over massive abutments
(latter buttressed), square piers with pyramidal caps.
Also in Morton parish.
Begun by the presbytery of Penpont who had gathered $680 in contributions. It collapsed while building and aid was then
sought from the Commissioners of Supply.
Hewison notes stone - now removed - on parapet inscribed
"William Norton, Master mason, St John's Thornhill, 1777",
and also a tradition that the bridge was designed by Wm.
Murdoch (of gaslight fame).
