Description

Late 18th century. Remains of tapering tower to circular-plan windmill. Rubble. 12ft height, internal diameter of 8ft, on walls 2ft thick. Single entrance 5ft by 3ft to SW. Wooden upper part, with sails, now gone.

INTERIOR: no remaining machinery.

Statement of Interest

Donnachie suggests that the remains are the base of a turret post mill, although also suggests the possibility of an 'amateur' windmill built by a local farmer. Douglas et al suggests it more likely that it was a wind-driven scotch mill for flax (Douglas et al, p35).
