Description

Dated 1893, style of Alexander Ross. Scottish Baronial,
asymmetrical 2-storey and attic mansion with square central
tower rising one storey above roof-line. Tooled squared
rubble, tooled and polished ashlar dressings. 5-bay S
entrance front with advanced and gabled centre bay with
simple Neo-Jacobean doorpiece and dummy bartizans flanking
gabled 1st floor; centre window with cable moulded
architraves and coat of arms above. Angle side lights flank
entrance. Rectangular tripartite projecting windows in outer
bays with decorative parapets raised at centre to
accommodate blank shield. At right, angle drum tower rises 2
storeys terminating with bellcast conical slated roof; at
left, angled corner with square 1st floor oriel.
5-bay return W garden elevation with rectangular projecting
window, tripartites and bipartites; 1st floor fenestration
breaks wallhead under crowstepped gablets; continuous
stepped string course links 1st floor fenestration at S and
W elevations.
Austere 2-storey and attic E elevation with substantial
4-storey square tower slightly set back at SE with 1st floor
oriel.
Corbelled and crenellated wallhead to tower with cannon
water spouts and angle stair turret above wallhead with
conical roof. 2-pane glazing; original rainwater goods with
decorative thistle detailing; coped wallhead stacks; slate
roofs; ornate cast-iron finials.
INTERIOR: entrance hall with Gothic screen separating
staircase (rising to 1st floor top-lit landing) with
continuous decorative cast- and wrought-iron balustrade.
DINING ROOM: (right), richly decorated coffered plaster
ceiling; panelled doors and window shutters.
DRAWING ROOM: (left), white marble chimneypiece; panelled
surround to window embrasures; strapwork design to plaster
ceiling with decorative cornice.
