The appearance of the house today is the result of the reduction to its present dimensions and general remodelling by J Drummond Beaton, architect in 1927. The illustration in Chambers History of Peeblesshire shows it as having another storey, a long ridge roof, and an older crowstepped range to the rear. The oldest portion that exists now is the vaulted basement which may date from 1663.
