Description

Extensive high coped rubble garden walls extend to west of

house; walls retain east raised garden. 2 large walled gardens,

1 to south and 1 to NW, all of 18th and early 19th century dates. Dovecote; early-mid 19th century square, 2-storey dovecote in

NW angle of NW walled garden; entrance in south wall; pair

vents in west wall and single vent in north (both giving onto

field) with internal shutters. Paired vents in each side of

SE angle, giving into 1st floor loft. Pyramidal Caithness

slate roof, with apex finial and weathervane.

Privy; early 19th century, square privy built into slope of

raised garden SE of house with cess pit blow; centre door in

south elevation reached by flight steps descending from garden,

and continuing to lower level; small window in centre, east

elevation; pyramidal Caithness slab roof with apex finial.

Interior; 2-seater bench fitting survives.

Statement of Interest

Dovecote probably for sporting purposes rather than to raise

birds for food. Shutters would enable birds to be released to

field for marksmen. Unusual survival. Privy also unusual

survival.
