16th century. Coursed, tooled sandstone bridge. 2-span pointed-arched bridge with hoodmould. Triangular cutwaters. Curved refuge in upstream parapet, triangular refuge in downstream parapet. Tarmac road.
A-Group with Newbattle Abbey, Newbattle Abbey Policies Fernery, Grotto and Ice House, Lothian Burial Ground, Maiden Bridge, Monkland Wall, North and South Sundials, Port Lodge, Newbattle Road and Abbey Road Wall and Gatepiers, Lamb's Nursery, Archbishop Leighton's House, 1-5 Riverside Cottages, Newmills Road, Dalkeith Lodge in Dalkeith Burgh and The King's Gate in Cockpen Parish. A bridge appears on Laurie's 1763 Map and is named as Newbottle Bridge on Elphinstone's 1774 map. There were 2 armorial panels on the W side of the bridge, above each arch which are no longer visible. The bridge was replaced by a new adjacent bridge in 1956.
