Description

CHURCH: 13th-15th cent. Gothic. Originally cruciform.
Transepts and Crossing (with Tower over) remain. Ashlar.
Corbie-step gables. Slated roofs (modern). Angle-buttresses.
Traceried windows. Square tower with polygonal stair-turret.
Interior: Ribbed vaults. Built-up arches to former Nave
and Chancel. Tomb-recess and piscina. Grave-slab of Robert
Boyd of Kipps. Rooms over Transepts. Traces of CLOISTER
AND CONVENTUAL BUILDINGS, to N. of Church.

Statement of Interest

Only Scottish house of Knights Hospitalers of St. John of

Jerusalem. In 1563 Sir James Sandilands, the last Preceptor,

resigned its land to the Crown and received them back as a

temporal barony. Title of Lord Torphichen was conferred

upon him. In 1579 lands and title passed to great-nephew

James Sandilands 10th of Calder (Midlothian) in whose

family they remain. Church was repaired and re-roofed

by 10th Lord in 19th cent.
