William Burn, circa 1830s. Picturesque gate lodge. Single
storey over raised basement to NW (falling ground to burn).
Circular-plan main block with gabled and piend-roofed
projections forming bi-axial V-arrangement to main elevation.
Rubble with stugged red sandstone margins and dressings; quoin
strips. Projecting eaves; exposed rafters.
S (MAIN) ELEVATION: gabled porch, depressed-arch
doorway, window on left return; parapet of avenue bridge over
burn immediately to right of porch, octagonal die abutting left side
of porch; flush 6-panelled door. Higher bowed bay at centre,
blocked window directly under eaves; blank bay to outer left.
N (REAR) ELEVATION: advanced, shouldered and
pedestalled stack at centre; curved walls to right and left with
window; swept, cat-slide roof over curved bay to right.
All windows blocked, formerly bipartite casements. Grey slate
conical roof, lead finial. Coped 2-stage wallhead stack, circular
cans.
BOUNDARY WALL: rubble wall with semicircular coping.
The lodge was the lodge to Finnart House, the former seat of Edward Caird who was a relative of John and Edward Caird, principal and professor respectively of Glasgow University. Finart is now used as an oil terminal for BP. Finnart House is listed separately.
