Samuel Barham, 1877-8; 2-storey, steeply gabled asymmetrical
school and schoolhouse. All rendered concrete. South facing
complex with school yard to rear. Tall single bay, gabled
schoolroom taking up west (left), rising full height with
large transomed and mullioned modern double glazing in north
and south, with hoodmoulds and drip-cills and chamfering to
transoms and mullions in south window. Entrance to schoolroom
(divided into 2 with internal glazed screen) in re-entrant
angle formed at rear by later cloakroom wing projecting from
west return elevation.
Entrance to single storey and attic schoolhouse in centre of
south frontage, under canopy linked to left window; canopy
over ground floor window in east gable. Mainly bipartites,
but long tripartite fills east gable in 1st floor.
Hoodmoulds; multi-pane glazing; bargeboards; decorative
wooden pendant apex newels; tall coped ridge and rear stack;
slate roofs.
Small bargeboarded single storey outhouse fronts rear door to schoolhouse. Playground to rear of schoolbuilding enclosed by
concrete wall, extending to enclose front of school and
schoolhouse; Wall raised at rear (north) to form rear wall of
single pitch slate roofed shelter, partially walled in centre
south front.
No longer in use as school.
Until circa 1970 an elegant slated fleche bellcote with
cast-iron weathervane terminated the crossing of the
schoolhouse and school roof ridges. (Gaskell, p1.11a.)
Unfortunate modern glazing 1984.
