1865, A and W Reid of Elgin. Gothic, cruciform plan mausoleum on raised terrace. Squared and coursed whinstone, cream ashlar dressings, set-off, gablet-capped buttresses and sculptural detail; base course and string course, moulded window surrounds and hoodmoulds with masque label stops.
NE ELEVATION: ashlar steps to terrace; pointed-arch doorway in moulded panel, with armorial and stepped hoodmould. Boarded door with scroll detail to cast-iron hinges, moulded surround with nook-shafts (engaged columns) and quatrefoils. Round windows to gable, with trefoil glazing panels. Gable flanked by paired buttresses; gabled with finials, and
crocketted pinnacles.
SW ELEVATION: band course stepped to enclose moulded armorial panel. Large rose window above to gable. Buttressed as above.
NW AND SE ELEVATIONS: ashlar niche in crocketted gabled panel above band course with nook-shaft and moulded pedestal. Buttresses as above.
INTERIOR: 3-tier burial vaults to side walls surmounted by angels on corbels. Stained glass to rose window.
Grey slates, gargoyles. Skew and blocking courses with raised ashlar band of quatrefoil ornament. Stone gargoyles. Grey slates. Cruciform finals to gables.
BOUNDARY WALLS RAILINGS, PIERS AND GATEPIERS: low, ashlar coped rubble retaining walls, surmounted by cast-iron railings with quatrefoil motif. Square gatepiers with gablet caps, (corner piers detailed more simply) gates with spearhead railings, quatrefoils and horn motif.
Two schemes were submitted for the mausoleum, one Classical, one Gothic; the latter was chosen by the Abercromby family, who still maintain the buildings although the Forglen Estate has passed out of the family. The motto on the over-door armorial reads "Mercy is my Desire".
