17th/18th and 19th century buildings comprising farm houses
and steading. Rubble, ashlar dressings, most roofs slated.
HOUSE is single storey and crow-stepped; said to date
from circa 1650, but it may be 18th century; whitewashed,
deepened on plan by addition to courtyard with main roof
continued and swept over addition; 3 wide bays with gabled
centre porch; end stacks, one heightened; wing to right
forms L-plan, and is 19th century in appearance. STEADING
essentially a long row, crow-stepped tall barn at end
dates probably from 18th century, large octagonal horsemill
adjoins; lower ranges, part with corrugated iron roof.
Report in Aberdeen Press and Journal 28.6.1988
states that Tresness was "built in 1650 by the Traill
family who went to Orkney with the brother of Mary Queen
of Scots"; it is said to occupy the site of a Viking
long house.
