Description

Originally: 2-storey and dormerless attic T-plan house of

c.1740, harled with ashlar dressings. South front 3-bay with

rusticated quoins, margins and cill and eaves band courses,

centre bay projects and raised as pedimental attic gablet

with broad stack, arched and keyblocked doorpieces with

moulded architrave, arch rings springing directly from

pilaster capitals; gables originally windowless with

cable-moulded scroll skews: rear wing enlarged on plan

c.1770/90 to form L-plan, broad 2-window gable. Rusticated

quoin angles with sections of cornice over looking down N

avenue; plain skews; 2 closer spaced attic windows in gable;

chimney gablet on W flank. Extensive alterations c.1911, 2

flanking wallhead attic gables with 4-light windows and slim

west wing containing service stair and servants rooms added

to produce gabled frontage; box dormers and 4 lights wide

ground floor rectangular bay added to N. elevation of back

wing. E wing added 1926 and demolished 1983. Interior work of considerable interest, unusual plan with long easy central

stair running back through series of timber arches to upper

hall in back wing, ceilings of both upper and lower halls

have plain circlets. Ground floor west room original kitchen,

high chimneypiece with lintel on cantilever brackets, 1st

floor west room has lugged architraved chimneypiece. Stair

rail replaced in cast-iron and other rooms partly refitted

c.1810 with reeded architraves between domino-block

cornerpieces, grey and white marble chimneypieces of similar

character, further woodwork added early 20th century, that in

N room with good decorative tiles.

Statement of Interest

Built for the Colvilles of Lochside. Proposals to reduce the

house to its original size and restore elevations to pre 20th

century state 1985. Simple baluster sundial with foliate

capitals on N avenue, gnomon missing.
