Late 18th century, with later alterations. U-plan court,
currently serving as stables. Rubble sandstone with
ashlar dressings. Ashlar piers to cartshed bays to NE
range, and with brick infill to SW range, creating
stables. Tack rooms and further stables in remaining
bays. Square leaded glazing patterns to certain windows.
Courtyard closed to SE, by semi-circular coped screen
wall. Red Pantile piend roofs, with grey slate eaves
easing course.
Site of N of Shepherd's Cottage, suggesting that the
courtyard originally served as a sheep-pen, in parklands
of the Dalkeith estate, to W of Smeaton House.
