Description

1777 dated portico but house could be several decades
earlier. Symmetrical tripartite-plan, 2-storey, 5-bay country
house with basement; additions - principally 3 ranges - all
19th century. Painted rubble with contrasting ashlar
margins and dressings; portico red ashlar. Piended slate
roofs.
MAIN BLOCK: rusticated quoins; steps with bottle nosings to
recessed central porch, engaged portico with 2 inner Doric
columns; narrow pediment over cornice; doorway and
sdielights in Venetian window arrangement - panelled door,
traceried fanlight; sash windows with 18-pane glazing to
ground floor windows with dropped cills, upper (12-pane)
windows, margins linked with eaves course: moulded deep
main cornice carried over all elevations; symmetrically
placed stacks; bell-cast roof. N elevation 3 bays with
?stair turret near centre.
ADDITIONS: canted and margined near full-height bay on E
flank; bow-ended single storey W wing: rectangular-plan
wing to NE with Venetian window central on 3-bay E
elevation.
INTERIOR: some cornice plasterwork; panelled doors in
architraves; timber and marble chimneypieces.

Statement of Interest

Inscription on portico "Too small for envy/for contempt too

great"; also initials "AJ" and "MB" and date. Recessed

entrance compares with Rammerscales House in Dalton Parish.
