Description

Circa 1805 ornamental stable block probably designed by the
architect of Gelston Castle, attributed to Richard Crichton.
4 2-storey ranged forming courtyard, rear elevations of
painted rubble or brick, show facade of finely droved red
ashlar. Converted to holiday flat complex circa 1970.
Symmetrical main facade in Gothic castellated style, taller
end pavilions with arched carriage entrances to ground and
hexagonal tower over central pend. Corbelled crenellated
parapet with small corbelled angle bartizans. 2-stage tower
with similarly detailed parapet over pend, hood-moulded
bipartites to 1st stage, single lights to 2nd, corbelled
parapet. Ranges to S, E and W with many inserted windows with
concrete painted margins, some in blocked cart arches; all
multi-pane sashes. Slate roofs throughout.
To W ornamental bull-faced rubble walls with crenellated
parapet and decorative arrow slits. To W wall Roman Doric
xedra niche. To rear of stables coped rubble wall to garden.
