Core of 17th century castle (possibly earlier) much altered
1879, M R Hadfield, architect.
Roofless shell, gutted by fire circa 1950.
Castle of irregular T-plan, with N wing of earliest date and
least altered, E wing extended at E gable 1879, short S wing.
Polygonal 4-storey stair turrets to NE re-entrant angle and
to N gable, latter now enclosed by full-height 1879 additions
to N.
Castle rubble built and harled with exposed mainly
roll-moulded margins, addition brick harled over; squat
granite buttresses to N elevation added 1879.
An important decorative feature are the string-courses of
cable moulding at cill levels which are stepped up around
windows and from a decorative ogee knotted loop over doorways
and some windows. Miniature multi-corbel course to eaves.
