John Milne (of St Andrews), 1864-5. Triumphal arch, Rhenish Romanesque, Aldbar stone, ashlar. Round arch between 60' high buttressed octagonal towers with short gabletted spirelets and wrought-iron finials. Top of arch finished with crenellated parapet with curvilinear gablet feature at centre.
Won in competition. Assessed by Queen Victoria. Built as memorial to the Prince Consort and to commemorate visit of Victoria and Albert in September 1861.
