Dated 1836. Tall grey granite obelisk on stepped square base prominently positioned on small hill on the N bank of the River Dee. Commemorates William Farquharson of Monaltrie, died in Vevay Switzerland 1828. Erected by his widow.
The monument is a significant landscape feature, positioned to be viewed from Ballater, the town that William Farquharson had, along with his brother Francis Farquharson established at the end of the 18th century. A plaque at the base of obelisk has the following inscription, 'In memory of William Farquharson of Monaltrie who died at Vevay in Switzerland 20th November 1828 aged 75 years erected by his affectionate widow Margaret Garden 1836'.
