William Robertson, 1837-8 with considerable additions and
re-modelling by A & W Reid, 1870 and 1920. 2-storey,
wide 3-bay house with 2-storey, 4-bay additions E (1870)
with some 1920 alterations and additions. Harled frontage,
rubble flanks and rear, ashlar margins and dressings.
Main house has centre door with corniced and pilastered
doorpiece flanked by narrow side windows. Centre 1st floor
window flanked by similar narrow lights. Ground floor
windows smaller than 1st. Shallow projecting pedimented
centre bay to N elevation, now with later canted 2-storey
window inserted. Canted bay to W gable. 12-pane glazing
survives in main front; mainly 2 and 4-pane elsewhere. Deep
bracketed eaves; 4 symmetrical panelled and corniced stacks;
shallow piended slate roof. E wing similarly detailed
with projecting centre bay and cast-iron balcony at 1st
floor on N elevation.
"Since (Blackhills) came into possession of Earl of Fife ...
a new and commodious mansion house, with suitable offices,
has been erected".
"Cottage for Blackhills" first designed and built with
entrance in raised ground floor over basement. Basement
revealed and new centre door inserted therein 1870.
Remains of beehive dovecot in garden.
Also Pictish symbol stone under stone shelter.
