Description

Early 18th century main house of 2 builds with earlier 19th
century frontage block. 2-storey and attic house, with
irregular N frontage. Harled with some ashlar margins.
Off-set entrance in NW front flanked by small windows and
with irregular 1st floor fenestration. 19th century canted
bay projects from right outer bay rising full height
terminating with piended roof with centre swept dormer
breaking eaves.
Single storey, 4-bay SE addition built against slope with
off-centre entrance. Varied glazing; end and wallhead
stacks; steeply pitched slate roofs, piended at rear wing.

Statement of Interest

Englishton means the place of the lowlander or English

speaking person. House formerly lived in by members of Fraser

of Lovat family; also by General Wade in 1720. During the

19th century it was a private lunatic asylyum; inmates

transferred to Craig Dunain in 1864.
