Description

Built circa 1755 with late 19th century alterations, 2
storey and attic, 17-bay range of varying dates. All harled.
Paired centre 5-bay blocks, each with centre door, 3 piended
dormers, end and ridge stacks. Left (west) block has late
19th century projecting bay windows flanking centre door with
linking roof forming porch. Late 19th century 2-storey, 3-bay
service wing at west gable, with 3 piended dormers rising
through wallhead; projecting stair wells at rear to all
3 portions.
At right (east gable) low 2-storey irregular 4-bay block which
appears to incorporate late 18th century 3 bay house with small
windows and former centre door as window. 1st floor door
with heavily checked jambs in east gable, reached by forestair;
piended roof. mainly 12-pane glazing; ridge and end stacks;
slate roofs.
Interior: in right section some raised and fielded
panelling to dado, doors and shutters, 1 basket arched
chimneypiece.

Statement of Interest

New Kelso was one of 3 linen factories established by

Board of Trustees of forfeited estates in Highlands (The

others Glenmoriston and Lochbroom). Not a commercial

success and converted to domestic use later in 18th century.

In 1810 the house was "exceedingly comfortable". New Kelso

once the site of an annual cattle fair on first Monday in

June; fair "completely fallen away" by mid-19th century.
