Description

J M Dick Peddie and Washington Browne, Dated 1903. Large
symmetrical educational building, wide 13-bay centre
portion with projecting wings creating U-plan. All rubble
with tooled dressings.
Slightly advanced centre 3 bays with central architraved
door and bracketted cornice supporting carved panel; 1st
floor window above with slim pilasters and clasping
obelisk, semi-circular pediment over entablature rising
into shaped gable with apex stack. Centre door approached
by shallow flight of steps flanked by windows in roll
moulded reveals. Bays 1-2, 4-5, 12-13, have paired
windows in both ground and 1st floors. Corbelled wallhead
parapet flanks centre shaped gable. 3 gabled dormers in
projecting wings face centre court; centre gablet flanked
by single box dormers.
Regular fenestration and gabletted dormers in east and
west elevations; 12-pane glazing; crowstepped gables;
ridge and wallhead stacks; slate roofs.
Interior; lofty rooms; wide staircase with simple
cast-iron handrail; panelled doors.

Statement of Interest

Plaque over door inscribed MFS and "Let there be light".

Built as a boarding technical school for the sons of

Highland crofters by Millicent Duchess of Sutherland.

The Duke of Sutherland donated the land on which the

school is built and $8,000; Andrew Carnegie gave $5,000.

Foundation stone laid by Lord Balfour of Burleigh, an

occasion attended by a large gathering of local land

owners and aristrocracy.

Building now serves as technical annexe to Golspie High

School.
