Description

Thomas Telford, c.1815. Tall 3-arched rubble bridge, the arch
rings of differing spans and at irregular intervals. Tooled
ashlar dressings. 5 columnar buttresses to each face, each
buttress decorated with single blind vertical and cruciform
arrow slits. Splayed approaches.

Statement of Interest

Bridge spans present line of River Lochy, re-cut and

re-aligned in early 19th century, a remarkable project

undertaken in order that the original bed could accommodate

the Caledonian Canal between lighthouse and westermost lock,

thus maintaining a straight course. (This section of canal

still marks the parish boundary with Kilmallie, formerly

defined by the river). Banks of river flanking bridge are

retained by rubble abutments. Some further walling

necessitated by modern Hydro Electric station at Mucomir.
