Description

1900, Frank C Carruthers, Lockerbie and Dumfries.

RETAINING WALLS: lining backs of Pow Burn, consciously rustic, apparently drystone wall built to courses, with rounded copestones of irregular size, sweeping up to bridge (formerly incorporating dam) at Lake View. BRIDGE: concrete beam bridge with rock-faced sandstone abutments. Simple iron railings, with modern supplementary protection, with panelled ashlar dies with ogee tops. Abutments wider than bridge to take dam (now removed) impounding ornamental lake. Dwarf brick wall with cast iron railings above site of dam.

Statement of Interest

Part of B group with items 30, 31, 32, 33 and 33B. The bridge is an early example of the use of concrete beam construction.
