Description

Dated 1813. Small semicircular wellhead, with half hemispherical head. Ashlar sandstone with vermiculated front faces. Remains of lion mask pipe inset with semicircular plaque above bearing Latin inscription.

Statement of Interest

Inscription commemorates the death of Allan Stewarton, founder of the Allanton estate who fought against the English at the nearby Battle of Morningside. The well originally had a cup and chain attached. Though now located in a wood it was originally on the route of the old estate Toll road, part of the main Edinburgh-Ayr road, that was moved north in 1817 when the artificial loch was created at Allanton House. No 1 Church Road in Bonkle was the original Tollhouse (see separate listing).
