Description

Dated 1870. 2 wide segmental arches spanning River Irvine with pediment-capped pilaster buttresses, vermiculated voussoirs and central triangular cutwater. Coursed, bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, soffits and cope; some brick repairs to cutwater. Roll-moulded string course. Pilaster buttresses flanking arches and forming end piers, rising slightly above parapet with pedimented caps; cap of central buttress dated.

Statement of Interest

A smart 2 segmental-arched bridge, situated prominently on the A759 to the south of Gatehead village. It is named after Old Rome Farm, which is situated just south-east of the bridge. It replaces the earlier Romeford Bridge, shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map (1854'9). An application for 'Bridge Money' for this bridge, 'continued from last year', appears in the Ayr Advertiser of 16 February 1871.
