Built 1595-1610. Restored later 19th cent. L-plan. 3
storeys and garret. Rubble (recently harled). Corbie-step-
gabled. Slated roof. Angle turrets. Semi-circular stair
tower (entrance) with iron gett; in re-entrant angle.
Iron window-grills. Interior restored: Great Hall notable.
Built for Sir Duncan Campbell, 7th of Glenorchy. Passed to
his son Patrick. Deserted in earlier 18th cent. in favour of
Dalfuir (known as Barcaldine House,) at Inveraray. Fell into decay.
Estate sold 1842 on death of Sir Duncan Campbell, 1st Bt.
8th laird of Barcaldine. Castle
repurchased by 3rd Bt. 1896 and restored for him.
