Description

Later 18th century. 2 rectangular-plan ashlar gatepiers with 2-leaf wrought- and cast-iron vehicular gate, flanked to each side by pedestrian (similarly detailed) gates. Gatepiers: base course; coping. S and N elevations of gatepiers similar with advanced central panel with round-arched niche. Classical detailing (of swag and shell motifs) to plinth above coping to S elevations of each gatepier; plinth flanked to each by consoles; ashlar smiling couchant lion surmounting both.

Statement of Interest

The gatepiers and gates are adjacent and flanked by the South Lodge (a pair of 2-storey buildings). This was the south entrance to the former Blackadder estate. The drive to the house from here led the visitor past the home farm, Blackadder Mount. Both of the lodges have been recently (during the 1970s, according to the present owner) renovated to remove their character. Opposite, across the road, there is a rubble dwarf wall, swept and ashlar coped, formerly with railings, which is terminated at each end by an ashlar obelisk.
