Description

Late 19th century pant well. Shouldered square base supporting octagonal shaft with rounded cornice, domed cap and cast-iron central lantern; rectangular trough abutting SW side. Sandstone ashlar. Boarded door with decorative wrought-iron hinges to SE side; cast iron lion's-head spout to NE side.

Statement of Interest

A picturesque feature occupying a prominent position in Douglas Square at the centre of Newcastleton, and making a positive contribution to the streetscape. It served to provide drinking water for both local residents (through the lion's-head spout) and animals (from the trough on the opposite side). Newcastleton was laid out from 1793 by Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, to his own plan, as a centre for by Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, to his own plan, as a centre for handloom weaving. This well is not shown on Ordnance Survey maps of any period.
