Early 19th century. 2-storey 3-bay farmhouse with small courtyard steading to rear (west). All rubble-built and whitewashed, house with contrasting painted ashlar margins.
House: east elevation: central panelled door with fanlight behind shallow (ashlar) corniced open porch; sash windows with 12-pane glazing. Straight skews; corniced end stacks; roofed with graded slates. Low rear wing to courtyard.
Steading: some altered/inserted openings; small L-plan range (built in 2 phases) closes court to south and to west;detached long range at north partly on boulder base.
Occupied by Thomas Carlyle (whose wife's family owned Craigenputtock) 1828-34.
