Description

Mather, Kalemouth, Builder. Suspension bridge of chain-link
type. 180 feet long. 16 feet wide. Iron rod suspenders,
alternately fastened to centres of chain-links. Wooden deck.
Wooden railings. Two stone pylons at each end; defaed panels
on eastern ones.
Built c.1830. Captain Samuel Brown, RN, engineer. William

Statement of Interest

Built at expense of William Mein of Ormiston near confluence

of Kale Water with Teviot. Intended for carriages as well as pedestrians. There was formerly a toll or pontage for

crossing it
