Circa 1700 (possibly 1704); unusual large finial, removed
from N gable of Dalton Old Church in 19th century when
heating system was installed: placed in present site -
between porch and tower of present parish church - presumably
when latter was built, ie circa 1895. Plain urn-shape on
pyramidal base with tall flaming finial. Raised on square
plinth. All ashlar.
For date see note to Old Parish Church.
RCAHM INVENTORY, 1920 notes this finial and compares it with
one - now lost - formerly at The Grierson Museum, Thornhill,
which may have come from James Smith's Queensbuery aisle at
Durisdeer (see Smith's contract drawing, copy in NMRS).
