Probably David Bryce of Edinburgh, architect, 1864-67.
Additions Sir R R Anderson (Edinburgh) 1896. Baronial
mansion built for Dalgleish family. Composition of
castellated tower block with 2-storey porch wing (rainwater
head dated 1908) to north, west and south' gabled ranges,
lesser ranges returned to north enclosing walled yard.
Tower with castellated parapets, circular corner stair
with caphouse (matching outlooks to other corners), false
machicolation, a full storey above roof height of the
mansion. Distinctive west range with near symmetrical
arrangement, centre 3-storey splayed and crowstepped bay,
corbelled square of 1st floor. South front with 4 gabled
dormers, thistle, rose and fleur-de-lys finials; line of
quoins remains in centre of wall; parchment scroll lintel
over bolection moulded door to garden. Interiors mostly
intact; restrained late Georgian to Bryce parts; later 17th
Century style to 1896 additions.
