William Hay 1842-3. Originally 6-bay buttressed rectangle
with lancets, slim W. tower with gablets and pinnacled spire,
Chancel 1876 with E. end of 3 lancets. Pinned granite rubble.
Plain interior, glass by Wailes. Early font with later I.H.S.
vesica added. J. Taylor bell 1843.
Landmark Ecclesiastical building in use as such. William Hay
was born Cruden 1818. Trained as an architect when
convalescent. St. James was his first job: joined John
Henderson 1844, thereafter to G.G. Scott's and America and
Canada. The chancel was designed after he had formed a
partnership with John Henderson's Son 1864.
