Late 17th century Italian terraced gardens attributed to Sir
William Bruce. Each terrace divided by balustraded walls
supporting urns; balustraded steps between levels; bold
buttresses supporting classical busts; pilastered keyblocked
arch with ball finials above cornice and blocking course,
cast-iron gate leads from upper terrace to park. Sundial. 2
lead statues close the long vista on the upper terrace. W A
Nesfield circa 1895 contributed the stairs with channelled
and keyblocked arched gateways and rococo cast-iron gates.
Described by Sibbald 1710 "a very pretty new house with all
modern conveniences of terraces, gardens, parks and
planting".
Gardens restored 1826-27 by Sir Ralph Anstruther under the
supervision of William Burn and the English gardener William
Sawrey Gilpin.
