The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The thatched roof has a turf ridge and two eye-brow dormers to the rear (east) elevation. Both gable ends have ashlar skews and a chimney stack. The interior was not seen (2021).
The building was renovated in 2004 including the replacement of felt roof tiles with water reed thatch and a turf ridge (SPAB Survey of Thatched Buildings Report). The building is thought to have been used as a parish school during the 19th century before returning to residential use in the 20th century (Canmore, 30214).
The use of thatch as a roofing material has a long tradition in Scotland. South View is among a relatively small number of traditional buildings with a surviving thatched roof found across Scotland. A Survey of Thatched Buildings in Scotland, published in 2016 by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), found there were only around 200 buildings of this type remaining, most of which are found in small rural communities. Thatched buildings are often traditionally built, showing distinctive local and regional building methods and materials. Those that survive are important in helping us understand these traditional skills and an earlier way of life.
Statutory address and listed building record revised in 2021. Previously listed as 'Collessie Village Southview (Mrs Rennie)'.
