Joseph Mitchell, chief engineer, 1861-3. High 7-span
viaduct. Bull-faced rubble, tooled ashlar dressings. 7 bull-
faced rubble arch rings supported by tall piers of similar
masonry; approach causeways flanked by castellated turrets
with dummy arrow slits; octagonal crenellated end piers.
Coped parapet with mirrored plaques at centre, facing railway
track.
Span; each arch - 45'. Height above river bed; 106' Overall
length; 477'.
Constructed for Inverness and Perth Junction Railway.
Plaques record Joseph Mitchell as Engineer in Chief and the
following as assistant engineers; W and M Paterson, John
Robinson, Hay, MacDowall and John Robertson. Contractor;
George Meakin, Birkenhead and John Dallas, Forres.
Foundation stone of viaduct laid by Lady Elma Bruce, 20 Oct
1861. Cost $10,231.
