Dated 1887. Pyramidal obelisk. Mixed random rubble with dark bullfaced quoins and base course. Inserted inscribed plaque (See Notes). Worn cast-iron bench seat encircles base of monument. Approximate measurements: base - 18' x 18' on plan height - 30'.
Plaque inscribed 'This cairn is erected in memory of Frances Harriet, Duchess of Richmond, 1887';. Obelisk constructed on
site of 'Ranald's Cross'.
A good example of an obelisk monument, the Whiteash Cairn forms a significant feature in the landscape. Frances Harriet Greville married Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 6th Duke of Richmond (1818-1903) on 28 November 1843.
