Description

Earlier to mid 19th century severe classical stable
range incorporating earlier buildings at rear. Coursed
red rubble sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. U-
plan.
S RANGE: symmetrical; raised impost and eaves courses,
6-bay. Advanced 2-stage entrance bay with altered roof
at centre with segmental pend and keystone; original
piend roof raised and slate hanging to upper stage at
sides. 2 recessed bays flanking each side with blind
arched panels; window inserted in outer right panels.
Advanced end bays with segmental archway to outer left
and blind panel with window to outer right. Windows
barred.
E RANGE: 2 cottages with irregularly spaced openings.
2 archways to right of centre blocked when formed into
2nd cottage. Lower eaves line than S range. Outer left
bay of S range with doroway at ground and granary
window above.
W RANGE: primarily blank with machine doorways at centre
and doorway leading to covered dairy passage flanked by
irregular windows.
COURT: lean-to rubble ancillary building with lower
adjunct, closing U-plan to N at E. Piend roofed pantiled
projection from W range at centre. Modern, open
corrugated iron structure to N end of W range at right
angles.
12-pane multi-pane and 4-pane glazing pattern to sash
and case windows. Slate piend roofs. Brick and
sandstone stacks. Ventilator to pantiled projection.
INTERIOR: 2 stalls to one side and 3 to other of S
range; boarded and curved with ball and acorn finials.
Cast-iron hay basket.
DAIRY PAVILION: probably later 19th century decorative,
octagonal plan dairy. Squared and snecked red rubble
with stugged ashlar dressings and battered base course;
yellow brick window jambs.
Narrow 3-pane windows to 7 faces, with doorway to E
face; boarded door, passage to W range, facetted roof
with swept, timber bracketted eaves; grey slates.
Leaded tapering finial. Swept ventilators to alternate
faces.
INTERIOR: square enamel tiled dado. Vaulted, boarded
ceiling with ventilator boss.

Statement of Interest

Built as stable range for Hedderwick Hill House

(demolished). Style and materials similar to Thurston

stables, almost certainly contemporary in date.
