Late 18th century. 3-bay, 2-storey and attic gabled inn.
Red sandstone rubble now with rough harling, and ashlar
dressings.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: ashlar porch added later with
roll-moulded doorway and piended slab roof. Strip
fanlight and 2-leaf boarded doors. Low cills to flanking
windows. 3 1st floor windows.
N (REAR) ELEVATION: lean-to extension.
E GABLE: 1 window to ground floor at right and 1 at 1st
floor to left, with small attic window off-centre left.
W GABLE: openings mirroring E gable with ground floor
window lowered to French door.
12-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows (1987).
Raised skews; gable end stacks with thackstanes. Grey
slates.
INTERIOR: Scotch pine woodwork and panelled interior
shutters.
Rubble coped rubble retaining wall to S by road and
falling ground to N.
Ruinous stable and cottage in L-plan sited on falling
ground to E of inn, formerly serving coaching parties on
London to Edinburgh route, no longer of special
architectural interest.
