John Kinross, RSA, 1898. 2-storey, Cotswold Elizabethan
style gate lodge. Squared and snecked Rattlebag rubble
with ashlar dressings. Moulded margins and mullions,
String course and moulded eaves cornice to projecting
E wing.
E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 4-centred doorway set obliquely
in moulded panel in re-entrant angle with ashlar roof with
crowning carved shell; hoodmould to doorway;
decorative bronze door handle. Bipartite flanking on
advanced S wing. Canted end to E projection linked to
Carlekemp gateway, with projecting wall and 4-centred
pedestrian gateway. Blank raised panel below eaves
between chamfered angles.
S (ROAD) ELEVATION: low, advanced gabled bay to right
with small light at ground and tripartite in gablehead.
Re-entrant angle to right filled obliquely at ground.
High boundary wall extending at left with gateway.
Windows bi- or tripartites; square lead-paned glazing
pattern to casement windows. Decorative square lead
guttering and gutter heads. Square stack set obliquely
on S ridge with cartouche carvings below moulded coping.
Original cans retained. Westmoreland slates.
INTERIOR: original woodwork, stone flagging and corner
chimneypieces.
GATES AND GATEPIERS: gabletted ashlar gatepiers E of
house, set obliquely with carved details and adjoining
pedestrian gate to left. Large panelled gates, swept up
at sides with billet moulding. Four-centred gateway to
W. Drum gatepiers to SW and SE entrances with graded
cone caps and ball finials.
Former decorative railings to S and E removed. Masterful
composition and play of rooflines.
