Early 19th century. Row of single storey cottages, 8 bays, now in single ownership, with adjoining byre and barn in linear formation to road. Alternating timber boarded doors and windows; window at outer L reduced in size; 1 small window at R end of range. Limewashed rubble with some painted margins.
W (REAR) ELEVATION: later extensions and lean-tos.
UPVC glazing replacing timber sash and case windows (4-pane over 6-pane). Grey slates laid in diminishing courses; stone ridge to cottages; stone skews to L gable; 2 ridge stacks, circular clay cans.
INTERIOR: not seen (2003).
is a good example of the type of vernacular building constructed for farm workers, painted in the locally traditional colours of cream and red. From map evidence it is clear a later horse-engine house once stood to the rear of the range. Hessilhead is a fairly remote, small settlement of which this is probably the best surviving building. Marked as Hessilhead Town on the current maps, the clachan consists of some small cottages, a former saw mill (now ruinous, 2003) and a building used as a school in the 19th century (converted into a dwelling 2003), all next to the Dusk Water. The ruins of Hessilhead Castle lie to the north east. 'Hazelhead' castle is marked on Andrew Armstrong's map of 1775.
