Description

Dated 1784. Circular, carved stone neo Classical ornamental pillar on square pedestal. Stepped base, reading "1784"; circular fluted shaft with central square dividing band course; carved oval medallions above and below; surmounted by marble urn with carved heads to left and right of base, carved frieze and spherical finial.

Statement of Interest

This very unusual garden ornament pre dates Thomas White's improvement plan for the grounds (1791) and the informalising of the estate of 1787-1819. It's position, axial with the house, suggests it was intended to complement the earlier formal garden plan.
