Probably by James Adam, mid 18th century. Octagonal, carved stone ornamental urn on octagonal pedestal. 2 stepped base; pedestal with carved key frieze; square base to urn; elaborately carved urn ornamented with scrolled panels and domed finial.
This urn was designed by James Adam as part of the Wilderness, which lay to the west of Arniston House. It was planted with larch and evergreens trees. Serpentine and symmetrical paths wind through the Wilderness, the centre of the etoile being marked by Adam's urn. It is possible that this is the "vase" mentioned by Mary Cosh (p225).
